A number of BMO Harris Bank customers received tax documents in the mail this week with other people's personal information, and they're still waiting for answers.
When Don Liebenthal brought in the mail Thursday, a tax document from BMO Harris Bank addressed to his wife caught his eye. Liebenthal saw a stranger's name, address, last four digits of a social security number and account number just below his wife's information.
"In today's day of identity theft you're kind of concerned by what information is out there about yourself, let alone receive someone else's information solicited to you," Liebenthal said.
The bank told Liebenthal it is aware of the situation and he says the customer service representative offered some advice.
"They asked me to be a good citizen and just shred the document, which I thought was kind of unusual," Liebenthal said.
The bank called the ordeal a processing issue. Officials told TODAY'S TMJ4 the mix up impacted a limited number of customers, but was not specific.
In a statement the bank said it, "Will be sending a letter explaining the situation and offering one free year of identity theft protection and credit monitoring."
Liebenthal wished he received that information from his bank over the phone.
"Even this morning when I asked, they had no information about what they were going to do other than the higher ups were going to be looking at it, and that was their terminology," Liebenthal said.
BMO says the piece of paper mailed out should have been cut and sent to two different people. Liebenthal, long time customer, is seriously thinking about switching banks.
"It's a good possibility, yes," he said.
The bank said, "The safeguarding of customer information is of paramount importance to us. We are currently assessing the issue to determine the cause."
